The idea for forming a full-service medical travel company began when one of our executives, at that time an operating room nurse, was involved in a serious car accident and her healthcare didn’t cover reconstructive surgery. Friends encouraged her to seek more affordable care abroad in Costa Rica. Her background in healthcare caused her to be a critical patient, asking in-depth questions to vet the quality of care. In 2002, after an extremely positive experience, she assembled a group of practicing health care professionals and, under the name of Medical Tours International (MTI), set out to establish relationships with providers around the world and act as an intermediary for people in similar situations.

Concurrently, a team CEOs and senior-level executives of hospital systems, insurance companies and healthcare companies began to build and monitor a provider network of pre-screened, quality healthcare facilities abroad. Their mission was to enable employers and insurance companies to continue to cover a variety of procedures despite the ever-rising costs of healthcare in the U.S. Pulling from decades of domestic and international experience with well-known organizations including United Healthcare, Prudential Insurance and Centura Health, they formed BridgeHealth International.
